No, this isn't tied to my Writecrastination blog, though I really should get something up there, too. This is the post I wrote today for my work blog. It's not funny, but if you have pets or children, and if you use (or are considering using) chemical lawn treatments, you might want to stop by and take a peek. I mean, what's so bad about dandelions, in the scheme of things? I sure like them better than watching my dogs die years before their time.
I'm told there's a natural product, made with corn gluten, that is beneficial in keeping some of the weeds and other undesirables from our yards. I'll have to research that and get back to you.
Honestly, when some of the lawn treatment companies will put their chemicals in their kids' baby bottles, I'll consider putting it on my yard. And then I'll decide against it anyway, because clearly they are idiots.

Okay, the rabbits are sitting by me helping to edit this. Many things labeled weeds are actually very good to have in your yard and should be encouraged. Clover is excellent for attracting bees, which are needed everywhere for pollination. Dandalions are edible too. Well, their leaves are anyway, and why would someone want to get rid of perfectly good food according to the bunnies?
That's pretty much what I think. Stuff grows where it grows for a reason... and who decided dandelions were weeds? I happen to know they're edible, and people even make wine from them (though the time my mom did that, it was nasty!). So. Natural plant life, and fewer sick pets. Win/win!
Right! So, when your mother tried to make this wine, when did she snag the dandelions for it? You have to get them kind of fresh, don't you, or is that just for the greens for salad? Anyway, the rabbits say there are plenty of things people could do with their yards without all of these chemical worries. And if they want to even manage losing the mower, the bunnies would like to suggest pulling the grass and putting in thyme instead. They claim this is perfect for dogs, too, especially if lemon thyme is used. They can come in from a run smelling lemony fresh and avoid awful things like bathing.
I totally agree. When my parents got their lawn treated, I would always want to move away for a week. We have never treated our lawn preferring to stoop and scoop...the dandelions...as the poop is natural fertilizer!
Our pooch will not be exposed to those chemicals ever either. Heck! We don't even mow!
Your work post really does hit it on the head. The correlations are too great to ignore.
Merelyme, how do you work it so you don't have to mow your lawn? Did you remove the grass and put in something else?
So true! Its horrible!

Lori..
Check out WOW at the Gardens Alive site. I live in the city and one of my neighbors (who never does lawn work ever!) asked me if he could put Trugreen on my lawn to help keep the dandelions out of his yard (which might I saw again.. he never works in anyway) and I freaked out. I did buy the WOW but haven't used it yet.
